Possible Future Collectible...Armstead Maupin Quote
In 2005, Starbucks began a new campaign entitled "The Way I See It" - they were printing quotations from famous people on all their paper cups. One quote from Armstead Maupin was found to be controversial by some groups. Below is the quote taken from the Starbucks cup:
The Way I See It #43: My only regret about being gay was that I repressed it for so long. I surrendered my youth to the people that I feared when I could have been out there loving someone. Don't make that mistake yourself. Life's too damn short.Â? Armstead Maupin, Author of the Tales of the City series and the novel The Night Listener.
Although the other cups displayed a wide range of ideas, critics singled out this quotation for allegedly promoting homosexuality. The Starbucks at Baylor University removed cups featuring it after complaints from a staff member. Starbucks, however, has no plan to pull the cup from the program. Once the news story made it to the local stations and papers, I noticed tons of people at my local store asking for the cup. In fact it might be the only Starbucks Cup (paper) that has been banned from several Starbucks stores.
Starbucks has a section on the website dedicated to "The Way I See It" - check it out if you want to read more about the authors and quotes. http://www.starbucks.com/retail/thewayiseeit_default.asp
